SMS/phone call for MFA
The following instructions explain how to log in using multi-factor authentication (MFA) with different methods. Please select the section that applies to you to get the appropriate step-by-step instructions.
If this is your first MFA method, the Windows Hello for Business setup wizard will appear the next business day when you log in for the first time. Please follow the instructions and configure your preferred method (fingerprint, facial recognition). A PIN must always be set up. If you prefer to set it up later, skip the setup wizard. To set up Windows Hello for Business yourself at any time, follow the Windows Hello for Business instructions.
1. Open security information
2. Choose sign-in method
3. Enter phone number
- Select country (e.g., Germany +49).
- Enter phone number: Receive code, Continue.
4. Enter verification code
- Receive a text message with a 6-digit code.
- Enter the code: Continue.
5. Completion
- Message: Phone number successfully registered.
- Confirm by tapping "Done".
6. Control
- Your phone number will appear in the security information overview.
- Changes or deletion are possible at any time.

Step 2: Choose your login method
A new window will open. Select "Phone" to add your phone number.

Select your country, for example, Germany (+49), enter your phone number, and click "Receive code." Then select "Next."
Step 4: Receiving the verification code
You will receive a text message from Microsoft with a six-digit code.
Step 5: Enter the code
Enter the code in the field and click "Next" to confirm your phone number.
Step 6: Completing the Verification
After successful entry, a message will appear confirming that your phone number has been registered. Click "Done" to complete the process.
Step 7: Verification
Your phone number will now be displayed in the security information overview. You can change or delete it at any time.

When registering for a University of Passau service (e.g., Outlook, Moodle, or Teams), first enter your university email address and click "Next".
Step 2: Enter your password
In the next step, enter your password and click "Log in" to continue.
Step 3: Select SMS verification
Since your account is protected by multi-factor authentication, you will now be asked to confirm your identity. Select the "SMS" option to receive a verification code.
Step 4: Retrieve the SMS code
Shortly after, you will receive an SMS from Microsoft with a six-digit verification code, e.g., 971546. Open the message and keep the code handy.
Step 5: Enter the code and complete registration
Enter the code in the field and click "Next" to confirm your phone number.
Employees cannot register by phone. They can only register via SMS.

During the call, press the hash key (#) to confirm your registration. Your identity will then be verified.
