Access to the university intranet and internet with eduVPN

EduVPN enables encrypted remote access to protected resources such as licensed databases or internal services, similar to being directly on campus.
After logging in with their ZIM ID, staff and students can establish a VPN connection to securely access the university network.

Attention: As of now (10 December 2025) you can configure eduVPN; for a transitional period, the university network can still be accessed via openVPN.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is mandatory for this. Depending on whether you are a staff member or student of the University of Passau, different methods can be used. Information and instructions are available at: hilfe.uni-passau.de/mfa.

ATTENTION: To make the one-time installation of eduVPN easier for you, an installation package is available via Zenworks.

  • If you already have an OpenVPN connection installed, use the "EduVPN Migration" package. This will delete the existing VPN connection and install the eduVPN client.
  • If you are installing a VPN connection for the first time, use the "eduVPN" package. This installs the client without any manual steps.

Note:

If you are on campus or working via Citrix, you do not need a VPN and therefore do not need to perform the new configuration.

EduVPN software download

In order to be able to use these access routes, you need the eduVPN software. We provide the VPN software including extensive documentation for members of the university.

  • Go on https://www.eduvpn.org/client-apps/.
  • Download and install eduVPN for your specific operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.).
  • Select the organizational access "University of Passau".
  • Log in using your pre-installed MFA method.
  • Then confirm the establishment of the eduVPN connection via "Approve" or "Genehmigen" - the connection will now be displayed in the eduVPN app. Now click the "Connect" button/slider ("gray" not connected, "green" is being connected).
  • After successful installation: To re-establish the connection, use the previously installed client. You will then need to log in using your configured MFA method and will then be connected via the secure eduVPN connection.

Step 1:

Open the website https://www.eduvpn.org/client-apps/.

Download and install eduVPN for your specific operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.).

Step 2:

Select "University of Passau" as your organization and use the organizational access.

NOTE: The "Secure Internet" access is not intended for university use. As a member of the University of Passau, you can use this access as a secure internet connection for private purposes, for example.

Step 3:

Log in using your pre-installed multi-factor authentication "MFA method". Y

Step 4:

Confirm the establishment of the eduVPN connection via "Approve" or "Genehmigen" - the connection will now be displayed in the eduVPN app.

Step 5:

There are two profiles (Personal for employees and Default for students, affiliates and guests):

  • If you belong to both groups, you can select your preferred profile here.
  • If you belong to only one of the two groups, the selection will be made automatically. The selection list will then not be visible.

Now click the "Connect" button/slider ("Gray" means not connected, "green" means connected).

Step 6:

NOTE:

After successful installation: To re-establish the connection, use the client you already installed. Please use your configured MFA method to log in. You will then be connected via the secure eduVPN connection.
