Passkey für MFA

The following instructions explain how to register and set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) with Passkey. Please select the section that applies to you to receive the appropriate step-by-step instructions.

If you wish to set up this MFA method, you must already have an existing, working MFA method (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator-App, TOTP-App, or SMS-method) during the setup process. Otherwise, it is not possible to register this method correctly.

Log in with passkey

With a passkey, you can sign in to your Microsoft account securely without a password.

This guide describes the sign-in process using an iPhone or Android device.

Step 1: Start the registration process

When you register for a service of the University of Passau (e.g., Outlook, Moodle, or Teams), first enter your university email address and click "Next".

Step 2: Select your login method

In the Windows Security window, select "iPhone, iPad, or Android device" and click "Next".

Step 3: Display QR Code

A QR code will appear on the screen with instructions to scan it with the device where your passkey is stored.

Step 4: Scan the QR code with your smartphone

Open the camera app on your smartphone and scan the displayed QR code.

Then tap "Log in with a passkey."

Open the message and have the code ready.

Step 5: Confirm the connection

A message will appear on your smartphone indicating that it needs to be connected to the computer.

Tap "Continue" to establish the connection.

Step 6: Connection established

The confirmation message "Device connected! Continue on your device" will appear on your computer.

Step 7: Complete the login

Your smartphone will prompt you to log in with the saved passkey.

Tap "Continue" to complete the login.

  1. Start the registration process
    On the registration page, enter your university email address and click "Next".
  2. Select your registration method
    In the Windows Security window, select "iPhone, iPad, or Android device" and click "Next".
  3. Scan the QR code
    Scan the displayed QR code with your smartphone (e.g., using the camera app or iCloud Keychain).
  4. Confirm the connection
    On your smartphone, confirm the connection by tapping "Continue". The message "Device connected! Continue on your device" will then appear on your PC.
  5. Complete the login
    Your smartphone will prompt you to log in. Tap "Continue" to confirm the login with your passkey.

Set up a passkey with the Microsoft Authenticator app

This guide will show you how to set up a master key (passkey) in Microsoft Authenticator step by step. A master key enables secure, passwordless login.

Step 1: Open Security Info

Sign in to https://myaccount.microsoft.com with your university account.
Click "Security Info" in the left-hand menu.
Then select "+ Add sign-in method".

Step 2: Select the Master Key Method

Select "Master Key in Microsoft Authenticator" from the list.

Step 3: Start the setup

In the "Create a passkey in Microsoft Authenticator" window, click "Next".

Step 4: Confirm Setup

Click "Next" again.
You will now see instructions on how to complete the master key setup in the authenticator app.

Step 5: Select your authenticator account

Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone.

Select your "University Account" (e.g., name@ads.uni-passau.de).

Step 6: Create a Passkey

In your university account, tap "Create Passkey".

Step 7: Enable AutoFill

The message "Enable AutoFill in Authenticator on the next screen" will appear.

Tap "Next" to continue.

Step 8: Enable autofill

In the next window, confirm with "Enable" to turn on the "AutoFill" feature.

This is necessary to save the passkey.

Step 9: Passkey creation

Wait until the process is complete.

The screen will display "Passkey creation".

Step 10: Passkey successfully created

After a short time, the message "Passkey created" will appear.

Tap "Done" to complete the process.

The screen will display "Passkey being created".

Step 11: Master Key Confirmed in Browser

The message "Master Key Created" will appear on your computer.
Click "Finish" to complete the setup.

Step 12: Checking the Security Information

After successful setup, you will see that the new master key has been entered in your "Security Information".

It will be displayed under Microsoft Authenticator – iOS Device or Android Device.

The setup is now complete.

  1. Sign in:
    Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with your university account.
  2. Open security info:
    Click "Security info" on the left.
  3. Add a sign-in method:
    Select "+ Add sign-in method ​​Master key in Microsoft Authenticator".
  4. Start setup:
    Twice click "Next" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Open the Authenticator app:
    Open the "Microsoft Authenticator app" on your smartphone and select your university account.
  6. Create a passkey:
    Tap "Create Passkey".
  7. Enable AutoFill:
    Tap "Next, Enable" to turn on "AutoFill".
  8. Passkey is being created:
    Wait until "Passkey is being created" appears.
  9. Finish in the app: ​​​​​​​
    After the "Passkey created" message, tap "Done".
  10. Finish in the browser:
    Click "Done" in the browser. The master key is now created.
  11. Verify:
    Under "Security info", you will see your new entry: "Master key - Microsoft Authenticator".
